Preparing for Surgery

Day of Surgery

Day of Surgery Information

You will be required to have a COVID test prior to your procedure that one of our testing sites will coordinate. You will receive more information during your pre-operative evaluation appointment.

Directions and Parking

Valet parking is available at the main entrance of the hospital starting at 6 am. Self-parking is available 24/7 in front of the hospital. For driving directions and more information on parking, click here.

Checking In for Surgery

Inpatient Surgery

If you are being admitted to the hospital, you will check in at the Admitting/Registration Office.

Day Surgery

If you are having day surgery, you will check in at Surgery Check-In. When you check in, one adult may wait with you until you are called in to the pre-operative area.

When you are checking-in, you will be offered the opportunity for the person accompanying you to receive text messages that provide updates as you progress from the OR to the recovery area.

When You Arrive

At Check-In, you will be asked to sign the following electronic documents:

Copies of these documents are available upon request or by clicking on the hyperlinks above.

Pre-Operative Area

After checking in for surgery, you will be brought from the waiting area to the Pre-Operative Area. You will change into a hospital gown, go through some questions with your preoperative nurse, have your vital signs checked and an IV will be placed. You will also meet with an anesthesiologist, a nurse anesthetist and your surgeon.

Occasionally, unplanned changes in the OR can cause delays. If such a delay occurs, we will keep you updated and be present with you for any questions or concerns you may have.

In the Operating Room

Select operating rooms at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital are equipped with OR Black Box technology, which captures audio, video, patient physiology, environmental factors and device feeds. The data collected is then electronically relayed to Surgical Safety Technologies Inc., the company that created the technology. Surgical Safety Technologies Inc. then analyzes the data and provides a report back to Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital that includes assessments of risk, surgical team performance, surgical technology and efficiency, as well as analysis of safety threats and resilience.

There is OR Black Box technology in two of the operating rooms. During your pre-operative evaluation, you will be provided more information about this innovative quality and safety pilot project.

Fragrance Free Policy

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital strives to be a fragrance-free environment. For the comfort and health of all, use of scents and fragrant products are discouraged. Please share this information with anyone who will be with you on the day of your surgery.
