Zikaras named Director of Pharmacy Services

Brian Zikaras, PharmD, has been named Director of Pharmacy Services at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.

Zikaras earned his Doctorate of Pharmacy at Northeastern University in 2010 and began his career as a staff pharmacist at CVS Health in Meriden, CT, where he was quickly promoted to team leader within a year. In 2013, Zikaras was hired as the Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services at BWFH.

Over the last several years, he has worked to expand the clinical pharmacy staff and to decentralize the pharmacy throughout the patient care units while maintaining the highest quality of patient care. Zikaras has worked with teams across the hospital to streamline the contents of the Omnicells, improve communication between the pharmacy and the outpatient infusion clinic and increase pharmacy presence on rounds and during codes. He has also helped implement and maintain the 340b drug discount program, ensuring BWFH is compliant with the program and optimizing cost savings as a critical Partners 2.0 initiative. He chairs the 340b Implementation and Compliance Oversight Committee, as well as the Drug Diversion Committee and has implemented a series of initiatives to decease risk of drug diversion in the hospital setting.

As the new Director of Pharmacy Services, Zikaras’s focus is on patient safety and quality improvement. “My goals right now are to continue to optimize pharmacy workflow and investigate new areas where we can expand our clinical coverage,” he says.

Zikaras says he learned many skills from the former Director of Pharmacy Services Joe O’Day, RPh, who recently retired, and looks forward to implementing those skills in his new role. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to lead such a great pharmacy department and to expand the services we provide,” he says.
