PACU nurse receives DAISY Award

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Department of Nursing recently honored Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) staff nurse Mary Deseignora, RN, with a DAISY Award.

DeSeignora was nominated by Dr. Benjamin Yudkoff of BWFH’s Department of Psychiatry. In her nomination letter, Dr. Yudkoff wrote:

Mary went absolutely above and beyond for an extremely ill patient with schizophrenia. Unwashed, no sociability, more or less mute, Mary encountered the patient three times per week during his ECT treatments. While ECT was helpful, Mary was able, somehow, to connect to this patient, through his confusion and vulnerability. He would speak to Mary about his dogs and hopes. He shared more with her than any one of his primary treatment team. When Mary learned that the patient was back sliding as far as treatment was concerned, understanding her own connection with the patient, she made a special visit to him on our locked inpatient unit and got him up and walking. That was a turning point in his care. Suddenly, seeing that dedication and special regard, the patient started coming consistently out of his shell. Mary is without hesitation deserving of this award as she embodies exactly what nursing is at its highest calling: treatment focused, patient centered, caring, and humanistic. There is no better example of nursing.

Deseignora was presented with her DAISY Award by members of nursing leadership and the Nursing Professional Recognition and Advancement Committee and her supportive co-workers. 

"It was an honor and pleasant surprise to receive a DAISY Award and hearing the nomination letter brought tears to my eyes," says Deseignora. "As part of a collaborative team who provides exceptional compassionate care daily, I believe this award extends itself beyond me. It is a privilege to be in the nursing profession and have the opportunity to provide patient-centered care in the hopes of making a difference in the life of one individual. That day was more meaningful than words can describe and an honor I will cherish."

The DAISY Award, established by the DAISY Foundation, is named in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at the age of 33 from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was inspired by the care that Patrick received and established this unique program to recognize and thank the nurses nationwide who make a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families.
