Like so many aspects of life, the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the way we share information. In the past, nurses at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital were encouraged to attend local and national conferences to share their work and learn from the work of others. With travel restrictions in place and large gatherings discouraged, our nurses and their colleagues have gone virtual, presenting their work at various online only conferences over the past year. Across the world, we have seen the harrowing images of COVID-19’s impact in India, Brazil and other vulnerable countries. These countries are reeling under the devastating impact of the pandemic. Our thoughts are with the millions who are impacted including their relatives who are working here at Mass General Brigham.
Situations like these can be stressful to both those directly impacted, and those who learn about it through news or social media. You may find these resources helpful:

To honor the lives saved and remember the lives lost due to COVID-19, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital recently unveiled our Hearts of Remembrance display. Located in the third floor corridor on the wall opposite the cafeteria seating area, this exhibit features a mosaic of blue and yellow hearts—each one symbolizing a life saved or lost at BWFH due to COVID-19, with one special red heart to remember our colleague Marie Deus.
The display also contains an interactive component for staff to add their own message or remembrance by picking up a white heart and writing a short message in memory or in honor of someone affected by COVID-19, or a personal message, and post it on the display.
White hearts and pens to use, along with hand sanitizer, are available right outside the cafeteria for anyone wishing to participate.
Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Community Health and Wellness Department is seeking volunteers to help distribute fresh food boxes to community members in need. Join us on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the month of May anytime that fits your schedule between the hours of 11 am and 5 pm at the in the Russell Auditorium at the George Washington Carver Lodge (80 Talbot Ave in Dorchester). For more information or to register, contact Katie Plante at kdplante@bwh.harvard.edu.
Across Mass General Brigham employees are continuing to get vaccinated. In fact, as of May 5, 82 percent of MGB employees have received the vaccine. If you have not yet received the vaccine, it’s not too late! The vaccines are safe, and they protect you, your family and friends, but many colleagues still have questions. If you need answers, simply look for a colleague wearing a badge that says “Ask Me About the COVID-19 Vaccine.”
As we continue to make progress with vaccination coverage and declining community prevalence of COVID-19, public health guidance and state/local regulations are adjusting as well. Mass General Brigham’s Density and In-Person Gathering Policy has been updated to allow for individuals to be unmasked in outdoor locations on MGB premises when reliably separated by six feet, consistent with the Mass. Masking Order. This policy has also been updated to permit guests for approved off-site social gatherings. Read the full policy.
The Universal Mask Policy has also been updated to reflect the application of state/local regulations related to face coverings in outdoor locations on MGB premises. Read the full policy. Note that common questions, including those related to holding outdoor meetings, gatherings and group photos, are addressed in the accompanying FAQs. Employees should continue to adhere to state/local regulations with respect to masking, distance and other public health measures, which may differ from state to state.
Recently, a safety report was submitted regarding an overly full sharps waste container in the ICU med room. Read the complete edition of Last Week In Patient Safety (intranet).
