Spotlight on the patient experience: New interactive TVs provide entertainment, education and more to inpatients at BWFH

Whether they are looking for a movie, a TV show, white noise, health education videos or general hospital information, inpatients at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital now have it all at their fingertips thanks to a new interactive TV platform that was recently installed.

The new platform features an easy-to-navigate interactive design where patients can access all the entertainment and information they might need during their stay from one remote control. In addition, patient education videos allow members of the care team to share important information with patients about their health on demand.

“We want our patients to feel relaxed, comfortable and well informed when they are with us,” says Amanda Moses, patient experience program manager. “This new system is similar to one you would find in a hotel, providing the key information they need to enjoy their stay.”

“From the clinical nurse’s perspective, the new system is a great tool when it comes to patient education,” explains Paula Wolski, MSN, RN, NI-BC, program director for informatics for nursing/patient care services. “For example, if your patient has congestive heart failure, you can help them find videos related to their medication, physical activity, diet and more so that they have the information they need to manage their condition once they leave the hospital. Plus, because the patient is engaged in education, it helps the care team with the documentation burden.”

The system is also ideal for orienting patients to the hospital. The screen displays their room number and telephone extension on the home screen and offers information on the Visitor Policy, Cafeteria hours, parking, the Patient Bill of Rights and Code of Conduct Policy and more.
