at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital

BWFH's Campus Expansion

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital received approval for the Determination of Need (DoN) submission in May 2022 to begin working on a campus expansion program to better support care in our communities. Construction began in May of 2023.

Construction Update: Nov. 4–15, 2024

Hillside Garage

Landscaping and seeding continue. The entrance canopy finish panels will be installed. Site fence removal begins Nov. 12. The building will remain locked and fence panels will be installed at the new garage entrances. Inside the garage, Boston Fire Department is scheduled to arrive to perform the sprinkler test for the garage interior. In addition, room signage, final painting, closing of ceilings and testing and preparation for inspections from the Inspectional Services Department will take place.

Inpatient Addition

Work is progressing for the inpatient addition. Please see the following updates for work taking place within hospital spaces from Nov. 4–15:

First-floor Radiology active spaces:

  • Shutdown of Radiology east corridor, phase 1, Monday–Friday, 8 p.m.–6 a.m. Access to IN/IR control room and Trophon room will be maintained.
  • Nov. 2: Completion of roof drain work above nuclear medicine (Radiology and Environmental Services have been notified).
  • Nov. 12: MRI/staff lounge renovation begins.

Second-floor Radiology active spaces:

  • Mechanical room (north --- future fire pump room), fire pump room construction ongoing.
  • Plastics office and café storage demolition and renovations.
  • Continued use of hospital loading dock.

Renovations to the second-floor corridor outside of PT/OT:

  • Corridor will be closed from Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. through Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. for new ceiling installation. During this time, patients entering through the Atrium Lobby will need to use the Hillside elevators to reach PT/OT. Signage will be posted.

Interior work within inpatient addition:

  • First floor: Flooring and ceiling grid
  • Second floor: Painting, ceiling grid flooring
  • Third, fourth and fifth floors: interior finishes
  • Mechanical, electrical and plumbing work on all floors
  • Mechanical penthouse cleanup

Exterior site work

  • On Nov. 2, removal of the electrical vault/transformer will take place. A crane will be set up in the loop road and require a full road closure from 8 a.m. to noon.
  • Exterior wall infill at the temporary loading dock
  • Granite curb install
  • Fuel oil tank piping and backfill
  • Roof protection and stair tower removal

Loop road paving

  • Beginning Nov. 12, paving of the loop road will begin. Police details will be on site to assist with traffic management. Full depth removal and binder coat will occur between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 12. The final overlay coat and line striping will happen at night.

Cafeteria

  • Construction of the existing seating area continues (third floor).
  • Framing for the new spaces and rough mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering begins (fourth and fifth floors).

Street enhancements

  • Line striping of Centre and Allandale Streets is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 6 at 8 p.m. through Nov. 7 at 4 a.m.

Upcoming work

  • January 2025: Demolition of the existing garage begins.
