The Susan Bezanson Patient Safety Award is presented annually to a Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital employee who demonstrates superior levels of excellence and the same dedication to patient safety and quality assurance that Sue Bezanson exhibited. This year’s recipient, announced during a recent Daily Safety Huddle, is Patient Safety, Clinical Compliance and Infection Control Senior Project Manager Trish Martin.

Bezanson was once described as an unrelenting spirit with a passion for both the great outdoors and her career in transfusion medicine. She was focused on patient safety and quality assurance, spearheading numerous patient safety initiatives at BWFH that helped shed light on the vital role of ancillary services in patient care prior to her death from breast cancer in 2008.

Like Bezanson, Martin is fully dedicated to patient safety. She was nominated for the award by Vice President of Clinical Services Susan Dempsey. In her nomination, Dempsey wrote, “I have gotten to know Trish as she has participated in all aspects of COVID-19 management over the past year. I know that her with COVID Management is just an example of the commitment to quality and patient safety that she exhibits in all her work. Trish is steadfast in ensuring that all of her work products are of excellent quality. She forms productive relationships with content owners and lends her expertise in quality and sound process to assist in solving problems and advancing care processes. She has a can-do attitude with a patient centered focus and is highly worthy of this recognition.”

For Martin, receiving the Susan Bezanson Patient Safety Award is very meaningful. “I am deeply honored to be recognized in a year that has presented so many unfamiliar challenges. The teamwork and dedication to patient safety I have witnessed from staff throughout the institution has been inspirational. I feel truly privileged to work for an organization whose priority is providing the highest level of patient care in the safest way possible.”
