I CARE recipients work as a team to provide the best possible patient care

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s I CARE Award recognizes staff members who go above and beyond their regular job responsibilities to make BWFH a great place to work and receive care. A team from the Department of Radiology was a recent recipient of an I CARE Award.

The team, which included Michelle Speranza, RT, Orlando Arroyo, RT, Dawit Woldeyes, RT, Irena Prosyanko, RT, Heidi Darcy, Bobby King, RN, Christine Possi, RN, Fran Forrestall, RT, Shayla Royal, RT, and Dr. Leslie Lee, was nominated by Interventional Radiology Supervisor Jeff Elwood, RT. In his nomination, Elwood describes the efforts that members of the department went to ensure their patient got the care he needed:

“We had an outpatient come over for a PICC line, and the situation was not ideal because the patient was not able to go on our equipment in IR due to weight limits. Two physicians and I went over several scenarios on how best to get this procedure done safely and I ultimately went to my supervisor (Rakesh Kannan) for his input. He suggested using room #4 in Diagnostic Radiology as it has a bariatric table,” wrote Elwood. “The diagnostic technologists over there could not have been more accommodating and were able to help us every step of the way. They helped with the procedure, the transport, the imaging and even emotional support for the patient (one of the diagnostic technologists spoke the patient’s native language). This was extremely helpful considering the IR technologists unfamiliarity with the room/equipment. There were also two IR technologists who should also be acknowledged for going over there and doing a great job in new territory, in addition to two of our IR nurses. We also got support from Dr. Leslie Lee who is very familiar with the equipment over in Diagnostic. He involved himself to add additional support for Dr. Adina Voiculescu who was also using this equipment for the first time and doing a very difficult procedure.”

The whole team was surprised with their I CARE Award by members of the Rewards and Recognition Committee surrounded by their supportive co-workers.

“On this particular day, team members from different areas within the Department of Radiology banded together to ensure the patient got the care they needed,” says Director of Radiology Brian McIntosh, BS, RT (R), CRA. “It’s truly inspiring to see this level of teamwork. It’s a great example of how frontline staff can provide an exceptional experience for our patients, exemplify our service excellence culture and support our strategic goals.”
