I CARE recipient steps up to help a co-worker in an emergency

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s I CARE Award recognizes staff members who go above and beyond their regular job responsibilities to make BWFH a great place to work and receive care. 7 South’s Amanda Davenport, BSN, RN, was a recent recipient of an I CARE Award.

Davenport was nominated by the ICU’s Meigan Young, BSN, RN, after she stepped up in an emergency. In her nomination letter, Young wrote, “It was the dangerously icy morning and my car slid on ice and slammed into a light post at 6:30 am on the way into work. I was a wreck and scared and alone. 911 dispatch told me that first responders were backed up and I would be waiting for a while before help could come. To my surprise, I see a white SUV honking the horn and I’m thinking, “What a jerk!” Then the white SUV pulls over and out comes Amanda, shuffling over to my rescue! I was so relieved to see a familiar face. She immediately sprung to help me. My head was bleeding and my clothes were bloody, but she threw me in her car to bring me to BWFH ED without hesitation. Amanda made me laugh the whole way, put a smile on my face and calmed my nerves. She even messaged me later that day to see how I was doing. I thanked her, she didn’t have to stop, but all she said was, “We need to take care of each other.” Our jobs are hard, but when we work with amazing people like Amanda, it makes it easier to forget how hard it can be. Though we don’t work side by side every day, Amanda still considered me as part of her team and went out of her way to be there for me. Amanda is an amazing part of our Faulkner family and I’m glad to work with her!”

Davenport was surprised with her I CARE Award in front of a gathering of her co-workers by members of BWFH’s Rewards and Recognition Committee. Upon learning she was receiving an I CARE Award, Davenport joked, “I’ve waited 12 years for this!”
