I CARE recipient shows warmth, compassion and professionalism

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s I CARE Award recognizes staff members who go above and beyond their regular job responsibilities to make BWFH a great place to work and receive care. The Weiner Center for Preoperative Evaluation’s Nickisha Hurlock, NP, was a recent recipient of an I CARE Award.

Hurlock was nominated for an I CARE Award by her colleague Judy Shelton, RN. In her nomination, Shelton recounted an interaction Hurlock had with a 92-year-old patient who had mistakenly been booked at BWFH when she should have been seen at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “The same thing happened 6 months ago, but the surgeon’s office booked her here again in error,” wrote Shelton. “Rather than send the patient home to wait for a new appointment at the main campus, Nicki decided to complete the visit here, thereby saving her another trip to BWH.

The patient is legally blind, relies on The Ride and has limited social support and no family in the area. Nicki showed such warmth, compassion and professionalism with this patient who was understandably upset—she left here feeling satisfied with her care and grateful to NP Hurlock. Obviously, the surgeon’s office was notified of the booking error and they too were very appreciative that Nicki handled it so well. While her behavior is always such that we are proud to have her represent our CPE department, many of her co-workers felt she really went above and beyond with this patient. This is Nicki’s first job as an NP, but she came to us with many years of experience as a BWH RN. She is, quite simply, perfect for our department and we are thrilled to have her.”

Hurlock was presented with her I CARE Award by Shelton, Director of Perioperative Services Kathleen Merrigan, MSN, RN, and members of the Rewards and Recognition Committee. After congratulating Hurlock, Merrigan exclaimed, “You’re a keeper!”

Do you know a BWFH employee who has gone above and beyond to demonstrate BWFH’s I CARE Standards? To nominate a fellow colleague for an I CARE Award, please visit our intranet, Vitals. A team of colleagues will personally recognize the employee by presenting them with balloons, a thank you card and a gift certificate redeemable in the cafeteria or Atrium Cafe.
