Hospitalist recognized for her research at SHM Converge

At their virtual annual conference this spring, Converge, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) honored Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital hospitalist Stephanie K. Mueller, MD, MPH, SFHM, with its Best Overall Research Poster for her project “Sub-Optimal Communication During Inter-Hospital Transfer (IHT).”

“In our abstract, we report on a CRICO-funded study evaluating the frequency of sub-optimal communication and medical errors attributable to lack of available clinical information during inter-hospital transfer (IHT),” explains Dr. Mueller. “We are so thankful for the recognition of this work as Best Overall Research Poster at SHM Converge. IHT is a common hospital-based care transition that involves discontinuity of care, which, like other forms of hospital-based care transitions, can leave patients vulnerable to errors in communication and gaps in information exchange. IHT patients are at even greater risk as they are a particularly sick subset of hospitalized patients. We hope that the recognition of this work will help to fuel ongoing focus to continually improve this process of care.”

SHM Converge 2021 was reimagined to offer participants a fully digital experience. The four-day event, which earned participants their CME credits for the year, was intended to re-energize and focus provider’s practice with the latest research, best practices and newest innovations in their field. Participants also had the opportunity to connect and collaborate with a vibrant community of hospital medicine professionals from around the world. In addition to her poster presentation, Dr. Mueller also sat on the panels for two workshops: “Top 10 Ways for Men and Women to Engage in Gender Equity” and “Necessary and Sufficient: Key Ingredients for Developing Scholarship in Your Hospital Medicine Group.”
