6 South nurse receives DAISY Award

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Department of Nursing recently honored 6 South nurse Maureen Holleran, MSN, RN, with a DAISY Award.

Holleran was nominated by the son of one of her patients for the exceptional care she provided to the father as well as the whole family.

In a letter to Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s president, the son wrote:

Almost everyone we’ve encountered, from nurses to doctors to transport staff to caseworkers have been nice, professional, given us answers that make sense, etc. One person, however, has stood out as being exceptionally fantastic, and that is my father’s day shift nurse, Moe Holleran. She is especially friendly/compassionate/good with people, she has been proactive in helping get answers when she saw there was a potential change she thought my Mom would have questions about, she is always prompt to respond to any questions my Mom has or anything my Dad needs and she is protective of her patients too.

My dad had a blood draw yesterday morning, he had one in the early afternoon and then in the late afternoon. Someone came by looking to draw blood again. Moe asked why the blood was needed, thought the test was done with the earlier afternoon blood draw (and she was right) and she made a few calls to find out if the afternoon blood draw was needed (it wasn’t). I certainly feel a lot better as a family member knowing that my Dad is in such caring hands that is on top of what has been done, needs to be done and doesn’t want any unnecessary pain from needle sticks.

My Mom is having a hard time emotionally—my Mom and Dad have each gone through a long list of health scares… For the past two days, Moe has been fantastic at reading my Mom; taking care of all of us, really, not just my Dad; and ensuring that my Mom’s fears are as relieved as possible.

Holleran was presented with her DAISY Award by members of nursing leadership, members of the Nursing Professional Recognition and Advancement Committee and her supportive co-workers. Of the recognition, she says, “I am extremely honored to be receiving such an important award. I am earnestly grateful and humble for the recognition from my patient’s son. I work hard every day to provide my patients and family members with the highest quality care.”

The DAISY Award, established by the DAISY Foundation, is named in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at the age of 33 from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was inspired by the care that Patrick received and established this unique program to recognize and thank the nurses nationwide who make a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families.
