Emergency Department nurse Sean Ford is joined by his team while receiving his I CARE Award
Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s I CARE Award recognizes staff members from all areas of the hospital who go above and beyond their regular job responsibilities to make BWFH a great place to work and receive care. Emergency Department nurse Sean Ford was a recent recipient of an I CARE Award after he provided an exceptional level of support to a grieving family.
Ford was nominated for his I CARE Award by fellow nurse Alison Carr, who wrote in her nomination letter:
Sean played a crucial role in taking care of a 2-year-old pediatric cardiac arrest patient that presented to the Emergency Department. Following the tragedy, Sean stayed past his overnight shift to comfort the family to the best of his ability. After the event, the mother of the patient requested to speak with Sean personally (she had requested him by name) to thank him for his hard work, dedication and amount of care he put into the case. The family had just suffered a major tragedy and still wanted to take the time to express their gratitude for all the efforts that were taken in attempt to save their child. Through one of their darkest times, Sean (as well as other nurses on the team) was able to make the family of the patient feel like every life saving measure was taken in attempt save their child. It is extremely difficult, but part of our job as nurses, to set our emotions aside and attempt to save a life. The emotional impact of a tragic loss not only affects the family but affects the care team as well. Sean has continuously displayed his ability to provide excellent care and emotional empathy for his patients and their families while remaining professional, even if it has been emotionally taxing on him and the team. Sean is an incredibly strong nurse that has time and time again shown his strength and outstanding nursing ability through even the most difficult and tragic of cases.
