Department of Nursing hosts continuing nursing education course

The Department of Nursing at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital recently hosted “Everything You Need to Know About Evidence-Based Practice and Research from A to Z.” The course, taught by Nurse Scientist and Regis College Professor Margaret Oot-Hayes, PhD, RN, gave nurses the opportunity to learn required elements of the Evidence-Based Practice and Research processes.

The course included six modules: Identifying a Problem in Practice and Conducting a Literature Search and Review of the Literature; Developing an Evidence-based Project or Research Study; Ethical Conduct of Research; How to Write an Abstract; Poster and Podium Presentations; and Publishing Your Findings.

In total, 17 nurses from BWFH attended the all-day workshop. “All six modules received outstanding reviews,” says Dr. Oot-Hayes. “The participants immediately commented that they found the presentation to be interesting, fun and interactive, which was echoed in the evaluations. The feedback also described how the nurses felt that the program improved their ability to conduct a literature search, produce a better poster and podium presentation, gain a better understanding of research and publish their findings.”

Colleen West, DNP, MBA, RN, CPHQ, Executive Director of Nursing Professional Development, Practice and Innovation, says it’s important that BWFH offer this training to its nurses. “We were delighted to design a program that gives nurses the potential to receive up to 22 contact hours for completing pre-work, attending the live program and applying learned skills in post-activity work. This is an incredible opportunity for all BWFH nurses. Dr. Oot-Hayes is a true expert in this work. She is a tenured professor at Regis College and former Chair of the Regis Internal Review Board. She has received numerous awards and honors, including being one of 25 researchers to be named by the National League for Nursing Education Foundation to a Promise of Nursing Faculty Fellowship, as well as previous funding from the National Institutes of Health.”

For nurses who were unable to attend the weekend workshop, the content will be divided into six modules and presented again during three sessions: February 13, February 27 and April 3. Drop-in sessions to support evidence-based practice will be held in the 4 North Computer Training Room on February 6 from 4 to 5 pm, March 13 from 4:30 and 5:30 pm and April 10 from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.
