Brian Coates recently assumed the role of Assistant Director of Facilities at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. In his new role, he will work closely with Director of Facilities Ed Pitts to oversee all operations related to our facilities, both inside and out. Coates comes to BWFH from Massachusetts General Hospital.
Coates originally began his career as an electrician, taking courses at night at Northeastern. He then joined Massachusetts General Hospital where he held a variety of roles over the last 17 years, most recently serving as Operations Manager in Buildings and Grounds.
When the opportunity to switch gears to the community hospital setting presented itself, Coates did not hesitate. “After 17 years at MGH, I was looking for a more intimate setting and a smaller group of tradesmen,” he says. “And the few times I visited BWFH, I found the people to be so kind and so inviting. It’s also nice to look out the window and see the beautiful grounds here.”
In his new role, Coates says he looks forward to mentoring the team. “It’s a small team and they are very good at what they do,” he says. “But I’d like to work on further improving efficiency and cutting back on some of the paper work required in our department.”
At home, Coates is a husband of nearly 25 years and proud father to three children. His oldest daughter, who attends Umass Amherst, is 20. His son is 18 and a freshman at Bridgewater State University. His youngest daughter is in the 10th grade. “I go to all their sporting events,” he says. He also enjoys spending time with his children at his in-laws’ Cape house. He also enjoys fishing. He says, “I fish any chance I can get.”
As the newest member of the Facilities Department, he is eager to get to know the building, its grounds and the staff here at BWFH. “Just call when you need help and I’ll be there,” he says.
