Jorge A. Alvarez, MD, PhD, recently began seeing patients at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in the Brigham and Women’s Medical Specialties group. Dr. Alvarez sees patients here at BWFH both in clinic and for inpatient consultation, and on Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s inpatient cardiology units. Dr. Alvarez is also part of BWFH’s Special Testing Center, where he provides transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, as well as electrocardiography, cardioversion and stress testing services.
Dr. Alvarez studied Biology at Harvard College before attending medical school at the University of Miami. There he also earned his PhD in Epidemiology. He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at Brown University. Dr. Alvarez was recently elected as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. His clinical interest is in cardio-oncology—he provides cardiac evaluation and care for patients with cancer prior to, during and after oncologic treatment.
After years of training in Miami and Providence, Dr. Alvarez is looking forward to settling into his new role. “I am looking forward to returning to Boston, where I spent time as an undergraduate and worked at BWH as a research associate after college,” he says. “Providing quality care and making use of my skills in cardiac imaging will be highlights, as well as interacting with the Hispanic population, as a native Spanish speaker. I've heard so much about the friendly and collegial atmosphere at BWFH and look forward to being part of the clinical staff.”
When he is not at work, Dr. Alvarez enjoys travel, cooking and running. He says, “While my last marathon was a few years ago, I have my sights set on the Boston Marathon as part of a charity team.”
