BWFH's Medicine Advanced Practice Professionals take part in interactive simulation experience

The STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is committed to advancing medical education, patient safety and healthcare outcomes through cutting-edge application of medical simulation technologies supported by innovative curricula, contemporary educational methodologies, continuous improvement and rigorous, multidisciplinary research. Recently, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Medicine Advanced Practice Professionals (APPs) had the opportunity to take part in an interactive simulation experience there.

“STRATUS provided a hands-on and interactive simulation experience by replicating a true to life rapid response clinical scenario,” says BWFH’s Chief APP Johanna Baldassari, NP, “The APPs had to actively assess and manage a simulation patient in distress. STRATUS personnel provided real-time feedback to the APPs by way of vital sign response, lab and imaging results and changing physical exam findings on the simulation mannequin.”

For the APPs who took part, the experience was invigorating. “The APPs thought it was fantastic and very well done,” says Baldassari. “One even said it energized them for learning.” 

While only a small group of APPs from Medicine attended this session, Baldassari hopes to expand the opportunity to other APP departments at BWFH in the future.
