BWFH surgeons receive Outstanding Citizenship Awards

Each year, the Office of Professional Development within Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Department of Surgery honors two faculty members who exemplify an unwavering dedication to the department, their colleagues and the community with Outstanding Citizenship Awards. This year’s recipients are among Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s finest: Erika Rangel, MD, MS, FACS, who serves as Director of Surgical Critical Care and Inpatient Programs, and Quoc-Dien Trinh, MD, FACS, Associate Surgeon.

Outstanding Citizenship Award winners are chosen based on how well they demonstrate the following:

• Service to the department: Has a track record of ongoing service in requested departmental and hospital committees and task forces.
• Professionalism and inclusivity: Treats everyone with respect; promotes diversity, inclusion and equity; promotes a positive, honest work environment.
• Education of trainees and others: Goes above and beyond to mentor and educate trainees, along with incoming or disadvantaged faculty.
• Commitment to other faculty members: Commits to the professional and personal well-being of fellow faculty members; refrains from self-aggrandizement, rumors and fake news.
• Departmental ambassador locally, regionally and nationally: Represents the department and the Brigham community well (i.e. scholarship, substantive work products with true contributions, leadership roles).
• Community relations and volunteerism: Promotes and participates in community activities on behalf of the department, hospital, patients and their families.

“I am so honored to receive this recognition of my work with women surgeons, particularly since I was nominated by my colleagues and I feel there are so many hard-working and dedicated surgeons in our department deserving of the award,” says Dr. Rangel.

Dr. Trinh is also honored to be named a recipient of the Office of Professional Development’s Outstanding Citizenship Awards. “I’m extremely appreciative of my colleagues in the Department of Surgery recognizing my clinical, operational and research efforts, especially with regard to racial inequity in cancer care,” he says.
