BWFH nurse present at Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses Convention

At the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses Convention, held recently in Chicago, 6 North Clinical Leader Jessica Ollis, BSN, RN, and staff nurse Kimberly Danna, RN, presented their poster “Narrowing the Gap Between Insulin Dosing and Glucose Monitoring” during the exhibit session.

The poster is the result of an evidence-based project aimed at reducing the time between glucose point-of-care testing (POCT) and administration of pre-breakfast insulin to less than or equal to 60 minutes, which is the recommended national standard. On 6 North, the project resulted in several practice changes that have brought the average time from POCT and pre-breakfast insulin administration to only 25 minutes.

“Our results are truly phenomenal,” says Ollis. “We could not be prouder of all the staff on 6 North!”

At the convention, other conference goers were equally impressed with these results. “Almost everyone that stopped by our poster stated they are having the same problems on their units and were hopeful that they could implement a project similar to ours to improve their patient care,” says Ollis.

In addition to sharing their own best practices, Ollis and Danna found new best practices to take back to their unit. “Sharing experiences with others is a great way to learn,” says Danna. “We went to many interesting sessions relevant to the experiences we see on the medical-surgical floors.”
