BWFH earns 2019 Leapfrog Top Teaching Hospital Award

Top Teaching Hospital Award

Highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital was named a Top Teaching Hospital nationally by The Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Top Teaching Hospital Award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive. Top Hospital designations are awarded by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on health care safety and quality.

The Top Teaching Hospital Award comes following BWFH’s Straight “A” Hospital Safety Grade, also from The Leapfrog Group. BWFH has earned an “A” since the inception of the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score in 2012. We are one of just 36 hospitals nationwide to earn this distinction.

“At Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, we continuously strive to maintain the highest standards, both for patient care and when training the next generation of caregivers,” says Christi Clark Barney, MSN, RN, Executive Director of Patient Safety, Quality, Risk Management, Infection Control, CDI and Clinical Compliance. “We are proud to be named a Top Teaching Hospital in addition to our most recent ‘A’ grade from The Leapfrog Group.”

About 2,100 hospitals were considered for Top Hospital awards. Among those, BWFH received a Top Teaching distinction. A total of 120 hospitals were selected as Top Hospitals, including:

  • 10 Top Children’s Hospitals
  • 37 Top General Hospitals
  • 18 Top Rural Hospitals
  • 55 Top Teaching Hospitals

BWFH is one of just three hospitals in Massachusetts to earn the Top Teaching Hospital Award this year.

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, practices for safer surgery and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“We are pleased to recognize Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital as a 2019 Leapfrog Top Teaching Hospital,” says Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “This demonstrates extraordinary dedication to patients and to the surrounding community.”

To qualify for the Top Hospital distinctions, hospitals must rank top among peers in the 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest known standards for quality and patient safety, and achieve top performance in its category.
