PACU nurse receives DAISY Award

In a special ceremony attended virtually by her coworkers, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Department of Nursing recently honored the PACU’s Ann Marie Bermingham-Hamrock, MSN, RN, with a DAISY Award at her home.

Bermingham-Hamrock was nominated by her colleague, Jill Benoit, BSN, RN. In her nomination letter, Benoit wrote:

Ann Marie has worked in this hospital for over thirty-six years. Ann Marie has worked as a floor nurse, Nursing Supervisor, GI nurse, ICU nurse and PACU nurse. Ann Marie has a magical way of making her patients feel special. She is close with her family and feels like her patients should have their family members close by too. Ann Marie has had her share of surgery and she uses these experiences to anticipate patients’ needs. I recall last fall Ann Marie had a young breast cancer patient. Ann Marie sat down next to the patient, cared for this patient’s pain and nausea and patiently medicated the patient until she felt better. She explained to the patient this sometimes happens in the PACU and we have medicine to help her feel better.

Ann Marie is hardworking, patient and kind. Ann Marie initiated nursing bedside report several years ago. It was initially an idea that was met with some resistance from staff members. Ann Marie remained strong and positive about her idea. Today, it is part of our practice and improves patient care.

Bermingham-Hamrock, who has been home coping with her own medical issues, was presented with her DAISY Award by Benoit, Professional Recognition and Advancement Committee member Phyllis Garr, BSN, RN, and several other co-workers while the rest of her team and members of nursing leadership and the Nursing Professional Recognition and Advancement Committee looked on via Zoom.

The DAISY Award, established by the DAISY Foundation, is named in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at the age of 33 from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was inspired by the care that Patrick received and established this unique program to recognize and thank the nurses nationwide who make a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families.
