The International Emergency Department Leadership Institute (IEDLI) is an educational initiative sponsored by Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine. The IEDLI’s mission is to:
- Provide leadership education for current and future healthcare leaders in emergency departments worldwide
- Promote high-quality and efficient emergency care
- Advance the field of emergency medicine leadership internationally
- Cultivate an international network of emergency department leaders
Luis Lobón, MD, MS, CEDE, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and Vice Chair of Community Emergency Medicine for Brigham Health, recently served as Course Director for the Continuing Executive Education Course (Con Ed), part of the seven-day program held this year in London.
With 87 participants and 20 faculty members in attendance, the IEDLI program brought together physicians, nurses and administrators from 21 countries. Courses included the Leadership Essentials Course, the Emergency Department Executive Certification Course (CEDE), the ED Design Course and Dr. Lobón’s Continuing Executive Education Course.
Many participants have completed the Leadership Essentials Course and have gone on to take the CEDE Certification Course in the past and are now coming to the Continuing Executive Education Course each year. For Dr. Lobón that is the most rewarding part of his involvement. “I had an alumnus tell me how excited they were to take the course again this year. He told me it gave him inspiration. For me, that’s what it’s all about,” he says.
The Continuing Executive Education Course is an interactive seminar that gives participants the opportunity to engage with international peers as they learn from faculty and share techniques for enhancing management and leadership skills in emergency medicine care delivery.
This year, the two-day course centered around “Leadership Strategies That Will Change Your Practice” and “The Emergency Departments as Intermediary of Care Centers.” On day one, as part of the “Leadership Strategies That Will Change Your Practice” heading, the group reviewed the future of Observation Units under emergency medicine, the management of emergency department overcrowding incorporating Code Overcrowding policies and innovative care delivery models. The curriculum for the day ended with a workshop on “Broadcasting your news and dealing with the media.” The participants had the opportunity to share their success stories with the Leadership Essentials Course participants and also network among themselves and faculty at the end of the day with a social event.
On day two Continuing Executive Education Course attendees participated in interactive sessions focusing on Emergency Department integration within the hospital and beyond, across the entire healthcare system. The day ended with a workshop on population health management strategies for emergency medicine leaders.
In addition to the learning opportunity, the IEDLI program provides a chance for networking and engagement beyond the course with on-line chats and database sharing. “We have been running this course for several years now and we hope to continue it for many more to come,” says Dr. Lobón. In fact, the program’s continued success means planning for next year has already begun with the dates set for November 5 through 11, 2018, in Brussels, Belgium.
