Dr. Shirly Tozzi recently joined Brigham and Women’s Primary Physicians at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. Dr. Tozzi, a native of Venezuela, studied medicine at the Central University of Venezuela before completing a residency in internal medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and a fellowship in infectious diseases at Tufts Medical Center.
“I’ve practiced both internal medicine and infectious diseases for many years, and enjoyed it. Now I have narrowed my practice and focus on internal medicine,” she says of her current focus on outpatient primary care.
Dr. Tozzi is thrilled to join the Brigham and Women’s Primary Physicians practice. “This practice has the benefit of being associated with a great academic medical center, while also having the unique advantage to patients of being inside a small, friendly and manageable hospital,” she says. “That means patients can get appointments and the best quality referrals fast. I think it’s the best of both worlds.”
As part of the practice, Dr. Tozzi will see adult patients of all ages. “I enjoy the full array of internal medicine and I don’t get scared by complex cases with multiple comorbidities,” she says. “I also find it very rewarding to follow my patients longitudinally from when they are young to when they are older. I have many families for which I see the uncle, the mother, the father, the daughter, etc. and I find that very rewarding.”
Dr. Tozzi is familiar with the community having once lived on Allandale Street, just a stone’s through from BWFH. As a native Spanish speaker, she says, “I also enjoy helping the Spanish-speaking community. I think they like knowing they can express their medical concerns in their native language and I understand the cultural background.”
Dr. Tozzi also speaks English and Italian.
When asked what she likes to do when she’s not taking care of her patients, Dr. Tozzi jokes, “I have an eight-year-old, he keeps me very busy!” However, she does find time to stay active with Zumba and yoga.
