Just after Thanksgiving, a group of 15 Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital staff and their children got into the holiday spirit of giving by financially sponsoring and serving brunch to approximately 80 guests at Rosie’s Place in Boston’s South End.
The event, organized by 7 South Nurse Director Mary Anne Barry, RN, BSN, MBA, was a rewarding experience and one that brought together staff from around the hospital. “Everyone worked well together to help the women who arrived for brunch. We were all assigned tasks, including meal preparation, cooking, serving and cleaning up,” says Barry. “Three members of our group were able to bring their children to assist with our effort. They all felt it was a great opportunity for their children to assist others who may be less fortunate.”
Senior Human Resources Generalist Sue Doherty was among the volunteers. “I believe in the mission of Rosie’s Place—to provide a safe and nurturing environment that helps poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives. Giving back to others, in particular to women that don’t have the means to have a warm meal or a place to get out of the cold, is an enlightening experience,” she says.
