6 North nurses receive I CARE Award

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s I CARE Award recognizes staff members from all areas of the hospital who go above and beyond their regular job responsibilities to make BWFH a great place to work and receive care. 6 North Clinical Leader Jessica Ollis, BSN, RN, and Professional Development Manager Phil Malleson, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, were recent recipients of an I CARE Award.

Both were nominated for their I CARE Awards by 6 North Nurse Director Suzelle Saint-Eloi, MS, RN. In her nomination letter, Saint-Eloi wrote of Ollis:

Jess is a resource and provides support in numerous ways for staff and patients. Her presence on the unit is valued as she is often the “go-to” person from needs such as patient flow, equipment, documentation and unit emergencies. She always makes herself approachable and available for staff. Specifically, Newly Licensed Nurses always feel supported by her and appreciate her ability to problem solve. Last year, Mobility Rounds was spread to 6 North. The rounds have been successful and embraced by staff. However, as the rounds evolved to include day and evening staff, Jess has extended herself and taken on a leadership role in championing and leading these rounds. Jess has been self-directed in coordinating the rounds, initiating the rounds and most importantly engaging patients in the process. She starts the rounds with a positive, can-do energy—with the goal of getting the most challenging patients up and out of bed. This has helped promote staff and patient engagement. The success of the afternoon Mobility Rounds is credited to Jess for her leadership and positive attitude. This exemplifies role modeling and the vital role of nurses as leaders.

Of Malleson, she wrote:

Phil is well known to many members of the 6 North staff. He has been the Educator for the unit, coordinating Newly Licensed Nurse orientation and countless activities supporting practice, education support and just-in time training. Phil recently resumed his role as the Professional Development Manager for 6 North. Phil humbly and eagerly resumed his role providing education and being a resource for the staff. Phil was swift in adapting his schedules to correspond with established 6 North rounds and meetings and left little time becoming fully engaged in the priorities of 6 North and becoming a champion. Most importantly, Phil has extended himself as a colleague and leader through joint interviews for candidates, facilitating orientation check-in meetings and providing support for a new team of staff. Phil has formed a partnership to provide education for PCA staff and is exploring additional opportunities to provide ongoing education for nursing and support staff. This is greatly appreciated as Phil has established himself as part of the 6 North leadership team. His commitment to education and professional development positions him as a good role model for staff and is deserving of recognition.
