Deland Fellows gain experience working alongside BWFH senior leaders

The Deland Fellowship, based at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, is a one-year administrative experience which prepares professionals to be leaders of healthcare institutions. Throughout the year, Deland Fellows focus on effective ways to bridge the worlds of science, medicine and administration. Deland Fellows pursuing administrative roles gain an in-depth understanding of the clinical aspects of healthcare; and those who have a clinical background explore the principles of management, operations and finance. Due to its flexible curriculum, Deland Fellows have the choice of working on a variety of projects to further define their areas of interest.

This year, two Deland Fellows are spending time at BWFH:

Judah Soray, BPharm, MHA, CSSGB, studied pharmacy as an undergraduate at the University of the West Indies and worked as a pharmacist in Trinidad & Tobago before earning his Master of Health Administration from the University of Central Florida in 2021. As a Deland Fellow, he has thus far enjoyed meeting with senior leaders at both BWH and BWFH—learning about their backgrounds and roles within the Brigham family. “During my Fellowship year, I hope to learn about what makes BWFH excel as a community hospital, and what this smaller setting might be able to contribute to the integration work being done within the greater Mass General Brigham network. Having undergone its own integration over the past decade, I’m certain there are lots to be learned from those experiences,” he says.

Jenny Torres, MBA, studied public health policy at the University of California, Irvine as an undergraduate. She then worked as Clinical Operations Manager for Intelli-Heart Services Inc. before pursuing her MBA at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. “My time as a Deland Fellow has been exceptional thus far,” she says. “It has allowed me to gain deep insights into the complexities our system faces and witness firsthand the dedication our team has towards enhancing every part of Mass General Brigham for our staff and patients. In addition, our executive team is phenomenal. They take the time to meet with us one-on-one and are eager to get us involved in problem-solving, ultimately gearing us towards our very own leadership success story. I am excited about the abundant learning opportunities this year will offer and to see where this journey will lead.”
