One Mission, One Community

From opening the nation’s first headache clinic to leading the way in breast health and diagnostics, for decades, our institution has been highly regarded as one of the region’s most important community teaching hospitals. We have consistently pushed the envelope of medicine to ensure that patients receive the latest treatments close to home. In this spirit of innovation, Faulkner Hospital forged an official partnership with BWH in 1998. A unique approach to medicine for its time, this collaboration fused the advantages of a small community hospital with the leading-edge advancements of a large academic medical center—and placed us far ahead of today’s healthcare reforms, which call for greater emphasis on high-quality healthcare in the communities where patients live.

As a testament to this successful collaboration in patient-focused medicine, our partnership with BWH matured into a fully unified organization called BWFH in 2012. Born through a seamless integration of these two institutions’ doctors, leaders, and resources, BWFH serves as a destination for outstanding personalized care and a portal to more specialized or advanced treatment at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), when required. BWFH patients benefit from the same leading-edge medicine and technologies available at BWH. Our community is united in our mission to help improve the health of patients and their families through compassionate, comprehensive care.

Patients and families first

In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare environment, there is a growing focus on providing patients with the right care in the right place at the right time. This approach is also a guiding principle behind the strategy at BWH and BWFH, with both hospitals working in close collaboration to care for patients and their families in the setting that best meets their individual needs.

For example, over the next three years we will be shifting 2,000 surgical cases—in areas such as orthopedics, general and GI surgery, urology, gynecology, and spine—from BWH’s Boston campus to BWFH in Jamaica Plain. This shift is a major element of our overarching strategy to offer patients more cost-effective care in an easily accessible, convenient location when it’s appropriate, while freeing up resources at BWH in Boston to concentrate on more complex, higher-acuity surgical cases.

With this in mind, BWFH is undergoing a complete renovation to accommodate this anticipated growth and provide patients and their families with the most welcoming, serene, and technologically advanced environment possible. Overlooking the tranquil Arnold Arboretum, BWFH’s 138 private inpatient rooms feature complimentary Wi-Fi, cable television, and are outfitted with the latest technologies. The new Taiclet Family Center provides loved ones with private space to consult with physicians, a waiting area with comfortable chairs, and access to computers, internet, phones, a copying machine, books, and board games.

BWFH patients receive care on our campus from many of the same physicians and services available at BWH—including general surgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiology, neurology, breast care, and emergency services—at a more affordable cost. Our hospital also features some of the most advanced medication safety technology, from secure electronic patient records to automated drug dispensing machines. Consistently excellent ratings in patient satisfaction surveys reflect BWFH’s commitment to compassionate, accessible medical care in a peaceful environment.

The Importance of Philanthropy

With a long history of medical first, BWH and BWFH comprise a clinical, scientific, and academic powerhouse dedicated to delivering life-giving breakthroughs and personalized patient care, while shaping the next generation of pioneers in medicine and science. Our $1 billion campaign—Life. Giving. Breakthroughs.—will benefit current and future patients, whether they receive treatment in Boston or directly in their hometowns. Life. Giving. Breakthroughs. will raise funds to enhance facilities and services across the entire BWH community, including at BWFH.

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital seeks to partner with philanthropically minded individuals and organizations who share our vision for excellence in healthcare: a vision for every patient to access the very best medical treatments directly in their communities. From capital improvements to programmatic needs, many opportunities exist to significantly impact the care that patients receive at BWFH—now and into the future. By supporting BWFH, you have the unique opportunity to be part of something truly extraordinary: world class care, close to home.
