Support Orthopaedic and Spine Center Services

Recent advances in technology have ushered in a wide array of new orthopedic and spine treatment options, including innovative minimally invasive techniques, advanced computerized tools for more precise surgical navigation, and high-tech arthroscopic instrumentation.

Occupying space over three floors of the hospital, these centers have undergone a major renovation to include the latest technologies and most comfortable, healing settings possible, and feature an outpatient unit, a new 24-bed inpatient unit, and renovated operating rooms.

Outpatient Unit

The Orthopedic and Spine Centers’ ambulatory suite, which opened in July 2014, builds upon the hospital’s proven expertise in caring for a wide range of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries. Through several specialty clinics and a space that features 25 examination rooms, clinician offices, waiting areas, and occupational therapy, the outpatient unit is expected to accommodate 15,000 patient visits annually. The unit houses the following programs:

  • The Brigham and Women’s Comprehensive Spine Center provides personalized, comprehensive care for patients with spinal disorders. The center offers innovative non-surgical solutions in physical medicine, pain management, and imaging as well as minimally invasive surgical options.
  • The Joint Center offers superior integrated care for joint disorders, including conditions of the knees, hips, and shoulders, and will incorporate ongoing patient and family education into its services.
  • The Foot and Ankle Center provides leading-edge, comprehensive arthritis and orthopedic services for the full spectrum of foot and ankle conditions, including arthritis, fractures, sports injuries, strains, and foot deformities as well as toe, tendon, and nerve disorders.
  • The Hand and Upper Extremity Center treats the full range of conditions of the hand, shoulder, arm, elbow, and wrist, including arthritis, repetitive stress injury, fractures, tumors, ligament disruptions, tendonitis, and sports-related injuries, helping thousands of patients every year from diagnosis through rehabilitation.

Orthopedic Surgery Center

In September 2014, BWFH opened a newly renovated orthopedic operating suite, which includes four dedicated operating rooms equipped for orthopedic surgeries. Surgeons conduct specialized inpatient and outpatient procedures, including knee and hip replacements and joint replacements of the hands and upper extremities. The operating rooms are outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment, new perioperative monitors, anesthesia machines, and specialized airflow systems designed to direct airflow away from patients to reduce infection risks. We expect that as many as 3,000 orthopedic patients each year will be cared for in these advanced facilities, with thousands more family members visiting the center.

Orthopedic and Spine Inpatient Unit

Slated for a fall 2015 completion, the renovated orthopedic inpatient unit will be designed to fulfill the specialized needs of orthopedic and spine patients, while accommodating their family members. Every aspect of the unit will foster healing, hope, and recovery. In addition to 24 private patient rooms, the unit will include:

  • A dedicated multi-disciplinary team, including nursing, physical, and occupational therapy as well as pharmacy, respiratory, case management, and social work specialists.
  • Space for patient exercise and rehabilitation, with equipment for use in early mobilization of post-surgical patients, and for educating patients and families on the safe return to home and community activities.
  • A family/visitors lounge, with a view of the Arnold Arboretum, and a reception area for patients, visitors, and families.
