Supporting Behavioral Health at BWFH

Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital's psychiatric services are a critical component of our commitment to the neurosciences and to providing access to expert, compassionate, and dignified care for people suffering from mind–brain disorders.

As such, BWFH will build upon the expertise we have developed and expand our commitment to behavioral health over the next decade. A number of related facility renovations and programmatic expansions will help patients to discover their highest human potential and be inspired to make recovery-oriented changes medically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

Outpatient Behavioral Health Suite

BWFH’s outpatient psychiatric unit completed a major renovation in the spring of 2014, resulting in a state-of-the-art, integrative behavioral health suite that streamlines its many services. Prior to the renovation, the department’s outpatient services were spread across different floors in the hospital, impeding the team’s ability to provide cohesive treatment for patients progressing to recovery. By co-locating outpatient psychiatric and addiction services, this suite has both expanded our capacity and created a modern, healing environment for patients and families.

Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program

Some patients do not require the level of supervision and support provided by an inpatient program, but need more intensive intervention than what is offered in most outpatient settings. The BWFH Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program serves these individuals. This outpatient evaluation and treatment program is designed to help psychiatric patients stabilize and improve symptoms while restoring independent functioning. The program meets an important need for people who are working to consolidate gains of an inpatient hospital stay or to prevent further deterioration that would require hospitalization.

Addiction Recovery Program

The BWFH Addiction Recovery Program offers a comprehensive array of clinical services for individuals seeking recovery from alcohol and other drug addictions. The program has served Boston and its surrounding communities for over 20 years, inspiring hope and treating individuals and their families with dignity, care, and respect as they face the challenges of recovering from the effects of alcohol and other drug addictions.

The program's experienced team of doctors, nurse practitioners, and nurses are specially trained in addiction recovery treatment. To aid patients’ withdrawal and recovery, the treatment team stays abreast of the latest breakthroughs in addiction medicine and incorporates them into their practice. Our advanced-practice addiction counselors provide patients with a wide range of specific techniques for successful recovery, including hypnotherapy, meditation, exercise, and cognitive and spiritual approaches to recovery as well as 12-step and other self-help methods. Counselors also educate patients through discussion groups and lectures.

Inpatient Psychiatry Unit

Home to the only inpatient psychiatry unit in the BWH family, BWFH’s next renovation milestone will include significant enhancements to the adult psychiatric inpatient unit. This 24-bed unit provides compassionate evaluation and short-term treatment for a range of acute psychiatric illnesses.

BWFH provides a full spectrum of mental health services, from day therapy to inpatient care to addiction recovery. Your support will enable BWFH to keep these much-needed services accessible to all who need it.
