We Are BWFH: Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee kicks off series of diversity celebrations with MLK Day
Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee (formerly the Cultural Competence Steering Committee) recently kicked off the “We Are BWFH” series of diversity celebrations with its Martin Luther King Jr. Day festivities.
During the observance, members of the committee served cake to BWFH staff and visitors and asked participants to identify their home country on a map. “In using the map, we wanted to find out what countries employees considered to be their home or affiliation,” says Mary Duggan, MEd, Program Manager for Workforce Development at BWFH and Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee Co-Chair. “We hope this information will help us plan future celebrations. It will also help us better understand what makes our employees’ culture special and what they identify with.”
Maureen Fischer, MSN, RN, CPHRM, Senior Risk Manager at BWFH and Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee Co-Chair, says, “We hope to use the information to plan a series of valuable and fun celebrations, as well as to inform us as we write questions folks can use when interacting with colleagues, patients and families that are both respectful and informative.”
During the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day festivities, the Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee also asked participants for suggestions on how to best celebrate diversity at BWFH and invited them to enter a raffle to win an Amazon Fire HD tablet (Jean Tremblay, RN, CNOR, was later announced as the winner!). As a result, the committee is now planning “We Are BWFH: The Caribbean” (Thursday, February 23) and “We Are BWFH: The Mediterranean” (Thursday, March 30). If you have a recipe or tradition you want to share, or an idea for a future “We Are BWFH” event, contact Mary Duggan or Maureen Fischer.
