Nursing Professional Development welcomes new Director
Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Department of Nursing Professional Development recently welcomed Colleen West, BSN, MBA, RN, CPHQ, as Nursing Professional Development Director. West studied nursing at Saint Joseph’s College and later earned an MBA at Boston College. She began her career as a staff nurse at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Most recently, she served as Director of the Center for Clinical and Professional Development at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
West’s love of nursing began at a young age. “My mother worked in a small family nursing home when I was a child. I would come to work with her quite frequently and spend time with the residents. Although my mom wanted me to be a nurse, I didn’t think it was for me,” she says. “As a teenager, I ended up working at the nursing home and found a lot of joy in caring for the residents as a nurses’ aide. It was so rewarding to provide care to the patients and help them feel better. After that experience, I knew that nursing was what I wanted to do.”
Over the years, West has grown and developed in her nursing career. “I’ve had many roles including clinical nurse at the bedside and various leadership positions,” she says. “As a nurse leader, I really enjoy working with the nurses and clinical staff to make improvements. At Dana-Farber, I loved connecting and partnering with colleagues to promote professional development, shared governance and nursing education.”
At BWFH, West will use the skills she’s honed over the years to help shape the Department of Nursing Professional Development. In her first few weeks on the job she has been meeting with Associate Chief Nurse of Practice and Innovation Helene Bowen-Brady, DNP(c), MEd, RN-BC, the Nurse Educators and other members of the nurse leadership team to define priorities and strengthen relationships between the Department of Nursing Professional Development and the Department of Nursing as a whole. “I am thrilled that I’ll be able to help support professional development here,” she says. “I’m so happy to be here and I’m looking forward to getting to know people and being able to work with everyone.”
When she is not at work, West enjoys spending time with family and traveling. “I have a 15-year-old and a soon to be 12-year-old. I keep busy going to their sporting events,” she says.
